We started our day with a walk through the streets lines with local venders on our way to visit teh Rabaul Market.

Once at the market we browsed through many food items including salted fish, fruits and the local betulnut. The betulnut is chewed by the locals and turns their teeth bright red. It is similar to caffeine and nicotine.

We also stopped at a local grocery store from some treats.

In the afternoon we went on a bus tour of the town and surrounding areas. The Rabaul Volcano erupted in 1984 and detroyed much of the town and its airport, It is a large volcano, derives its name from the town of Rabaul inside the caldera. The caldera has many sub-vents, Tavurvur being the most well-known for its devastating eruptions over Rabaul, the outer flanks of the highest peak, a 688-metre-high asymmetrical pyroclastic shield.

We next went to the Yamamoto Bunker which was the control bunker for all the Japanese Anti-Aircraft defenses and searchlights. It is an impressive concrete structure that has sustained punishment from aerial attacks, and in 1994 was covered in volcanic ash. It is rumored the Admiral Yamamoto spent his last night in Rabaul at this bunker, before he was shot down over Bougainville.

Yamamoto was responsible for planning much of the Japanese strategy in the pacific and we shot down by allied forces during the war.

We ended our day on a mountain ridge overlooking the town and bay.
